Collection: Chrome Electric Towel Rails
Chrome electric towel rails — mirror-polished heat, no plumbing required
A chrome electric towel rail gives you a mirror-polished ladder radiator that runs entirely from a fused spur or plug — no pipework, no boiler, no bleeding. Every rail arrives pre-filled and factory-sealed with heat-transfer fluid and a pre-fitted element, so installation is four wall brackets and one electrical connection. The standard fix for bathrooms with no central heating, loft conversions, extensions, rented flats, and any room where you want warm towels in summer without firing the boiler.
- Ready to install — pre-filled and sealed, no plumbing, no bleeding
- Fast heat-up — 20–35 minutes to full temperature on a correctly sized element
- UK stock — held in Coventry (CV7), same/next-day dispatch

Chrome electric towel rail sizes and heat output
Chrome is a low-emissivity finish (ε ≈ 0.10 vs ε ≈ 0.92 for powder coat), so a chrome rail produces roughly 25% less radiated heat than the identical rail in anthracite, black or white. That matters when sizing for a room rather than just for towels — the figures below account for it. Outputs are at ΔT50 to EN 442 principles. For room-heating purposes, a powder-coat finish delivers meaningfully more output from the same footprint.
| Size (W × H) | Typical output | Recommended element | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 × 800 mm | 166 W / 566 BTU | 300W | Cloakrooms, narrow walls |
| 300 × 1200 mm | 254 W / 868 BTU | 300W | En-suites, tight alcoves |
| 400 × 800 mm | 198 W / 677 BTU | 300W | Small bathrooms, guest WC |
| 400 × 1200 mm | 306 W / 1,044 BTU | 400W | Standard bathrooms |
| 500 × 1200 mm | 358 W / 1,220 BTU | 400W | Family bathrooms |
| 600 × 800 mm | 264 W / 899 BTU | 300W | Wide walls, low ceilings |
| 600 × 1200 mm | 409 W / 1,396 BTU | 600W | Larger bathrooms, bath sheets |
| 800 × 1200 mm | 512 W / 1,748 BTU | 600W | Wide walls, maximum output |
Figures are for a standard ladder rail in chrome at ΔT50. Exact bar count and fill volume are on each product page.

How much does an electric towel rail cost to run?
Formula: element watts ÷ 1000 × hours on × unit rate. At the Ofgem price cap (26.11p/kWh, Jul–Sep 2026), assuming a thermostatic element cycling at ~50% duty once the rail is warm:
| Element | 4 hrs/day | 8 hrs/day | Continuous (24 hrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150W | 8p | 16p | 47p |
| 300W | 16p | 31p | 94p |
| 400W | 21p | 42p | £1.25 |
| 600W | 31p | 63p | £1.88 |
Most households land between 15p and 40p a day on a timer. A basic on/off element runs at full power the whole time it's on and costs roughly double — which is why we recommend thermostatic or WiFi on anything over 300W. Try the live running cost calculator →
Choosing the right element
| Element type | Control | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (on/off) | Manual switch, full power while on | Occasional use, holiday lets, lowest upfront cost |
| Thermostatic | Adjustable temperature, cycles to hold it | Daily use — the sensible default |
| WiFi / timer | App or programmable 7-day schedule | Lowest running cost, heat only when you need it |

IP ratings and bathroom zones
Towel rail installations in bathrooms fall under BS 7671 zone rules:
- IPX4 — suitable for Zone 2 (≥600 mm from bath or shower edge). Covers the majority of towel rail positions.
- IPX6 — recommended for Zone 1 (directly adjacent to a bath or shower). Available on selected models.
The fused spur or switch must sit outside the bathroom zones. Your electrician will confirm zone position before first fix.
Why choose chrome?
- Finish — high-polish chrome suits contemporary and traditional bathrooms and matches standard chrome brassware
- Plumbing-free — no pipework means no floorboards up, ideal for rentals, extensions and retrofits
- Year-round warmth — dry towels in summer without running the central heating
- Honest trade-off — chrome shows water spotting and limescale sooner than powder coat and outputs ~25% less heat. If the rail is your primary heat source in a cold room, consider anthracite or white for better thermal performance.
Chrome electric towel rail FAQs
Do electric towel rails heat the room or just the towels?
Both, but modestly. A 400W chrome rail puts out roughly the same heat as a small panel heater and will take the chill off an en-suite or small bathroom. It won't heat a large family bathroom in mid-winter on its own — for that you need a rail sized to the room's heat loss, or a rail plus a supplementary heat source.
How much does a chrome electric towel rail cost to run per day?
Typically 15p–40p a day for a thermostatic rail on a timer. Multiply element wattage ÷ 1000 by hours of use by your unit rate — a 300W element running 8 hours a day costs about 31p at 26.11p/kWh.
Can I install a chrome electric towel rail myself?
The rail itself, yes — it's four brackets and a level. The electrical connection is regulated: in England and Wales, new circuits and most bathroom electrical work fall under Part P and should be carried out by a qualified electrician. A plug-in model on an existing socket outside the bathroom is the exception.
Do chrome electric towel rails need filling?
No. Every rail ships pre-filled with heat-transfer fluid and factory-sealed. You never open, bleed or top up the rail — if it loses fluid, that's a warranty claim, not a maintenance task.
What size do I need?
Measure available wall width first, then go as tall as the space allows. Rough guide: 300–400 mm for cloakrooms and en-suites, 500–600 mm for a standard bathroom, 600–800 mm for bath sheets or higher heat output.
Can I use a chrome electric towel rail with a heat pump?
An electric rail is independent of your heating system entirely — which is exactly why it suits heat pump homes. A heat pump at ΔT30 delivers only around half the output a boiler would from the same CH rail; electric sidesteps that entirely.
How do I clean a chrome towel rail?
Soft microfibre cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Dry afterwards to prevent water spots. Never use bleach, acid-based limescale removers or scouring pads — they pit chrome permanently and void the warranty.
Can I leave an electric towel rail on all the time?
Yes — they're designed for continuous operation. But with a thermostatic element there's rarely a reason to. A 7-day timer set to come on an hour before you shower gives the same warm towel at a fraction of the running cost.
