IP ratings and bathroom zones

Towel rail installations in bathrooms fall under BS 7671 zone rules:

  • IPX4 — suitable for Zone 2 (≥600 mm from bath or shower edge). Covers the majority of towel rail positions.
  • IPX6 — recommended for Zone 1 (directly adjacent to a bath or shower). Available on selected models.

The fused spur or switch must sit outside the bathroom zones. Your electrician will confirm zone position before first fix.

Will a matt black towel rail fade over time?

No. The finish is a powder coat — electrostatically applied and oven-cured. UV from bathroom lighting at normal levels does not bleach it. Some very cheap imported rails use a spray-applied lacquer that can yellow or peel; ours don't. Normal bathroom exposure (steam, splashing, mild cleaning products) will not affect the finish.

Does matt black show water marks?

Less than chrome, more than anthracite. The flat texture diffuses light so water spots aren't immediately obvious, but on a pure black surface a white limescale deposit will eventually show if left to build up. A quick wipe-down after each shower prevents it entirely. For homes in very hard water areas, anthracite is the most forgiving finish.

Why does black produce more heat than chrome?

Powder-coat emissivity (ε ≈ 0.92) is roughly nine times higher than chrome (ε ≈ 0.10). Higher emissivity means more energy is radiated as heat from the rail surface. At the same fluid temperature, a black rail will output approximately 25% more radiated heat than an identical chrome rail — a genuine difference when sizing for room heat loss rather than just towel warming.

Can I install a matt black electric towel rail myself?

The mechanical installation (four wall brackets, level, fill-and-seal already done at factory) is well within DIY capability. The electrical connection — a fused spur in most bathroom installations — falls under Part P of the Building Regulations and should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
