IP ratings and bathroom zones
Towel rail installations in bathrooms fall under BS 7671 zone rules:
- IPX4 — suitable for Zone 2 (≥600 mm from bath or shower edge). Covers the majority of towel rail positions.
- IPX6 — recommended for Zone 1 (directly adjacent to a bath or shower). Available on selected models.
The fused spur or switch must sit outside the bathroom zones. Your electrician will confirm zone position before first fix.

Why does anthracite produce more heat than chrome?
Thermal radiation from a surface depends on its emissivity — how efficiently it converts stored heat into infrared radiation. Chrome has very low emissivity (ε ≈ 0.10), so most heat is lost by convection rather than radiation. Powder-coat finishes like anthracite have high emissivity (ε ≈ 0.92), so they radiate heat much more efficiently. The result is roughly 25% more useful heat output from the same physical rail at the same fluid temperature.
Does anthracite show limescale?
Barely. The dark matte texture diffuses light instead of reflecting it, so hard-water deposits and water marks are not visible at normal viewing distance. In contrast, chrome acts like a mirror — every drop leaves a visible trace. For homes in hard-water areas (most of England), this is a real practical difference in weekly cleaning time.
Will the anthracite finish chip or peel over time?
No. The anthracite powder coat is electrostatically applied and oven-cured at high temperature, which bonds it to the steel at a molecular level. It's fundamentally different from a spray-applied lacquer. Normal bathroom use — including steam, splashing and cleaning with mild detergents — will not cause it to peel or crack. Avoid abrasive pads or solvent-based cleaners.
Can I install an anthracite electric towel rail myself?
The rail itself, yes — it's four brackets and a level. The electrical connection falls under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, so a qualified electrician should carry out the fused spur connection. A plug-in model on an existing socket outside the bathroom zones is the exception.
What IP rating do I need?
